Minecraft LIVE September 2026: The Sift Becomes Minecraft's Fourth Dimension
Minecraft LIVE's September 2026 broadcast delivered the biggest reveal the game has had in over a decade: a fourth dimension is coming to both Java and Bedrock Edition. Alongside that, the next game drop got its first showcase with a new frozen cave biome and mob.
The Sift: Minecraft's First New Dimension in 14 Years
Joining the Overworld, the Nether, and the End, the Sift will be Minecraft's fourth dimension, and the first new one added since the End launched. Mojang showed a glimpse of the dimension along with one of its native mobs during the broadcast. It's described as vibrant and alive with souls, a sharp visual departure from the other three dimensions. No release date was given for its arrival in the base game, though the reveal confirmed it's planned for next year on both editions.
Ice Caves: The Next Game Drop's New Biome
The first look at the upcoming game drop centers on ice caves, a new underground biome joining the ranks of dripstone, lush, and sulfur caves. Expect frozen terrain packed with calcite blocks, along with two new features: icicles that grow naturally from the ceiling, and ice crystals that grow from the ground and emit a soft light, both usable as builder blocks for icy or defensive structures.
A new frozen zombie variant will call the biome home. It hasn't been officially named yet, but it hits harder than a regular zombie, applying a freezing effect on contact, and some variants throw ice balls at range. Mojang's Game Director Agnes Larsson reiterated that adventure remains a core long-term focus for Minecraft, and this new mob fits that push toward tougher, more distinct threats.
Community and Platform Updates
Minecraft Education celebrated its 10th anniversary during the show. Nintendo Switch 2 was confirmed to get its native Minecraft release on October 27. Sound effects packs are coming to the Marketplace, expanding audio customization options beyond the current library. A new community challenge was also announced, tasking players collectively with placing 50 million straw beds and 200 million cushions across the Overworld.
Elsewhere in the Franchise
Minecraft Dungeons II launches September 29, introducing an interconnected open world instead of the level-based structure of the original, along with a new dimension called the Sift that players can explore ahead of its eventual arrival in mainline Minecraft. The sequel's story follows an ecosystem in crisis after the events of the first game, with illagers organizing into a new "Illager High Council."
Minecraft World, a real-world theme park land developed with Merlin Entertainments, is set to open in 2027 at Chessington World of Adventures in London. It will include a Minecraft-themed hotel and Escape the Nether, billed as the world's first Minecraft rollercoaster.
