Aquarium "Freshwater Sharks"

In the aquarium trade, bony fish species are called "freshwater sharks" or "sharkminnows," such as cyprinids and shark catfishThese fish are unrelated to true sharks but are named for their shark-like appearance and swimming behavior. They are popular in home aquariums due to their sleek bodies and active swimming patterns.

A small number of freshwater fish cyprinids and shark catfish (which are bony fish and thus quite unrelated to sharks) are also commonly called "freshwater sharks", "sharkminnows" or simply "sharks", particularly in the aquarium fish trade:

Bala Shark

The bala shark (Balantiocheilos melanopterus), also known as the tricolor sharktricolor sharkminnowsilver shark, or silver sharkminnow, is a fish of the family Cyprinidae, and is one of the two species in the genus Balantiocheilos.[2] This species is not a true shark, but is commonly referred to as one because of its torpedo-shaped body and large fins.

Rainbow Shark

The rainbow shark (Epalzeorhynchos frenatum) is a species of Southeast Asian freshwater fish from the family Cyprinidae.[2] It is also known as the ruby sharkred-fin sharkred-finned sharkrainbow sharkminnowgreen fringelip labeowhitefin shark and whitetail sharkminnow.[3][4] It is a popular, semi-aggressive aquarium fish. Unlike true sharks, which belong to the Chondrichthyes ("cartilagenous fishes") lineage, the rainbow shark is an actinopterygiian ("ray-finned fish").

Myxocyprinus is a monotypic genus of freshwater fish in the monotypic subfamily Myxocyprininae within the family Catostomidae, with its only species being Myxocyprinus asiaticus.[3][4] It grows to about 1.35 m (4 ft 5 in) long.[5]

The term "freshwater shark" is often used to describe certain cyprinid fish, such as the spanner barb, which are commonly found in well-oxygenated forest streams and are known for their omnivorous and benthopelagic behavior. These fish are easy to breed in captivity and are prolific breeders, often producing over 500 juveniles per nest. They are also known for their ability to detect food with small barbs around their mouths and their acclimatization to aquariums. However, due to the demand for the aquarium trade, these fish are threatened by excessive fishing in their original environment.
